viel or viele?

a1

viel goes with uncountable amounts (viel Zeit, viel Geld), viele with countable plurals (viele Leute, viele Bücher). The same split applies to wenig/wenige.

viel

Uncountable, singular, usually without an article: viel Wasser, viel Arbeit.

Ich habe nicht viel Zeit.I don't have much time.

viele

Countable, plural - and declined like an adjective: vielen Leuten, vieler Menschen.

Viele Leute waren da.A lot of people were there.

The mistake

Ich habe viele Zeit.

Ich habe viel Zeit.

Time cannot be counted (no 'two times' in this sense), so the singular „viel“ is used.

Rule of thumb

Test: can you put a number in front (zwei Bücher)? Then viele. If not (zwei Zeiten?), then viel.
