bei or mit?

a2

English with covers both; German splits them: bei means at someone’s place or near something, mit means together or by means of. Living bei someone means living in their flat; living mit someone means sharing it.

bei

At the place of a person, company or thing. Dative. Also temporal for accompanying circumstances: beim Essen, bei Regen.

Ich wohne noch bei meinen Eltern.I still live at my parents’ place.

mit

Accompaniment or instrument. Dative. Also with means of transport: mit dem Bus, mit dem Rad.

Ich wohne mit zwei Freunden zusammen.I share a flat with two friends.

The mistake

Ich arbeite mit einer Bank.

Ich arbeite bei einer Bank.

An employer takes bei. Working mit a bank would mean two parties cooperating - right for a company, wrong for your own job.

Rule of thumb

Bei is a place, mit is company. If you can insert together, take mit; if you can picture at their place, take bei.
