wann, wenn or als?

a2

English says 'when' for all three. German distinguishes: wann asks a question, wenn covers repetition or condition, als a single event in the past.

wann

Only in questions - direct or embedded.

Wann kommst du?When are you coming?

wenn

Whenever (repetition) or if (condition); also used for the future.

Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.When/if it rains, we stay at home.

als

A single event or a stretch of time in the past.

Als ich klein war, wohnten wir in Köln.When I was little, we lived in Cologne.

The mistake

Wenn ich zehn Jahre alt war, zog ich nach Berlin.

Als ich zehn Jahre alt war, zog ich nach Berlin.

You were ten exactly once - a one-off event in the past takes „als“.

Rule of thumb

Once in the past? als. Every time or if? wenn. A question? wann.
