Ort, Platz or Stelle?

b1

English place becomes three German words: der Ort is a locality or a setting, der Platz an area or a seat, die Stelle the exact spot - and in working life a job.

der Ort

A locality or the setting of an event: Geburtsort, Tatort, Urlaubsort.

Der Ort hat nur dreihundert Einwohner. The village has only three hundred inhabitants.

der Platz

An area with edges: der Marktplatz, der Sitzplatz, der Sportplatz. Also room in the sense of space: Hier ist kein Platz.

Ist dieser Platz noch frei?Is this seat still free?

die Stelle

The exact spot, often small and unnamed: die Stelle am Arm, die Stelle im Text. Also a job.

An dieser Stelle habe ich nicht weitergelesen. That is the point where I stopped reading.

The mistake

Ich suche einen neuen Platz als Ingenieur.

Ich suche eine neue Stelle als Ingenieur.

A position of employment is a Stelle. The wrong sentence sounds as if someone were looking for a seat on which to be an engineer.

Rule of thumb

Ask about size: a settlement is an Ort, an area a Platz, a point a Stelle.
