Explanation
What it is. Conjunctional adverbs link two main clauses in meaning, but grammatically they are adverbs. Common ones: trotzdem (nevertheless), deshalb/deswegen/darum (therefore), dennoch (yet), außerdem (besides).
How it works. When such an starts the clause (position 1), the conjugated verb stays in second position and the subject follows the verb - this is called Inversion:
- . Adverb + Verb + + ...
Examples.
- Es war kalt. Trotzdem gingen wir schwimmen. - It was cold. Nevertheless we went swimming.
- Ich habe keine Zeit. Deshalb komme ich nicht. - I have no time. Therefore I'm not coming.
- Es regnete stark. Deswegen blieben wir zu Hause. - It was raining hard. That's why we stayed home.
Common mistakes. Because these are adverbs and not subordinating conjunctions, the does not go to the end. Write Deshalb gehe ich ( second), not Deshalb ich gehe. Compare with weil (a real ): ... weil ich keine Zeit habe ( last).
About Conjunctional adverbs: trotzdem, deshalb, deswegen (inversion)
Conjunctional adverbs (trotzdem, deshalb, deswegen, dennoch, außerdem) trigger inversion.
trotzdem (nevertheless), deshalb/deswegen (therefore), dennoch (yet), außerdem (besides) connect main clauses. At position 1 the conjugated stays second, so the comes after the verb.
Konjunktionaladverbien stehen auf Position 1 und führen zur Inversion ( vor ).
Caution
These are adverbs, not subordinating conjunctions: when they start the clause, the verb stays in second position and the subject follows it ('Deshalb gehe ich ...').
