Genitive preposition 'infolge' (as a result of)

infolge is a formal genitive preposition meaning as a result of / owing to. It marks a chain of events: the triggering event A follows infolge, and the main clause states what resulted from it. It is close to aufgrund; both take the cause, but aufgrund names a reason or basis, while infolge stresses that one event followed from the other.

When no genitive marker is available, use infolge von + Dativ: infolge von Überschwemmungen.

Common mistakes:

• Mixing it up with aufgrund: after infolge, exactly as after aufgrund, comes the cause - the consequence belongs in the main clause. infolge only puts more weight on the sequence of events. Not: Infolge des Staus gab es einen Unfall.
• Using the dative directly: infolge des Sturms, not infolge dem Sturm.
