die Strasse

street (Switzerland) - Swiss standard German has no ß at all

Origin

Switzerland and Liechtenstein dropped the ß from writing; it is „ss“ everywhere - on street signs, in newspapers and in school books alike. Writing „Straße“ in Zurich is not wrong, but it marks you as German at once.

Examples

  • Die Bahnhofstrasse ist gesperrt.

    Bahnhofstrasse is closed.
